Church Ruins Deep In The Forest
It is a real romantic place for a date and a popular hiking place for nature lovers. Visit it.
The ruins of the Paulite Monastery in Gönc can be found 320 metres above the sea level on the ourskirts of Gönc in the Zemplén Mountains. The ruins can be reached from Gönc along the trail with red cross marks (5 km), or from Telkibánya along the trail with red marks (so called Rákóczy trail) through Potácsháza (3 km).
The Paulites started to build the monastery in the late 14th century. Its seven altars were consecrated in 1420. During the reformation it was ransacked. In 1940 bricklayers from Gönc tried to stop the building from demolishing further. Archaeological work started in 1985, but only a test ditch was dug and then filled in. On 22 June 2005 the archaeologists from the Herman Ottó Museum in Miskolc started another excavation.
It may have been a small monastery with one nave, one sanctuary and one tower. Their main walls still stand. Its stone window frame can be seen in the Huszita House in Gönc.
